My name is Steve McGarry and over my five-decade career I’ve designed record sleeves for the likes of Joy Division and John Cooper Clarke … played in bands and created TV and radio commercials … written and drawn numerous syndicated comic strips … worked as a story artist on billion-dollar movies in The Minions franchise … and become one of the world’s most widely published soccer illustrators!
In those five decades I’ve had my own series in every major U.K. football weekly – including Match, Match of the Day and Shoot! – a daily football series in The Sun, the world’s largest circulation English language newspaper - and my magazine client list ranges from Kicker in Germany to Tembah in the Middle East. Since 1982, my wallchart and preview packages on every major football tournament have been circulated to newspapers worldwide. For the 1998 World Cup, for example, The Sun - in conjunction with sponsors Budweiser - printed and distributed 4 million giant A1 size wallchart posters through the length and breadth of the U.K.
In 2018, my Playing For A Draw exhibition on the history of soccer art in comics and beyond debuted at the National Football Museum in Manchester, England.
